Ultimate guide to AI writing tools for marketers in 2023

Ultimate Guide to AI Writing Tools for Marketers in 2023

So I bet you’ve heard of these AI writing tools.

Depending on who you ask, they’re either going to change the way marketers produce content forever, or they’re only useful for generating low quality SEO content. The more you look into the technology and tools built on top of it, you’ll probably come to the conclusion that the reality is somewhere in the middle.

If you’re just here trying to figure out if AI writing tools are the real deal for marketers, let’s cut to the chase.

Short answer: Yes

Longer answer: Yes, with some caveats. You need to use them responsibly, understand what Google thinks of them, and be aware of what tasks they are good at and what tasks they are bad at. [Update January 2023] Google’s most recent update was related to it’s quality grader guidelines and is pushing its new “E-E-A-T” framework. This stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. If your AI-generated content doesn’t nail this framework, it might be time to consider changing up your content creation workflow.

Long answer: Keep reading for more info about the evolution of AI for marketers, what Google thinks about it, what tasks they are really good at, and a big list (and a Notion database) of all the AI writing companies you could ever want with pricing info, social profiles, and descriptions of what they do. 👇

Ever since a certain company raised a giant pile of cash in October 2022 to continue building their AI-powered writing platform, it seems like everybody’s on the AI train for the foreseeable future. Even the skeptics and apathetics are starting to come around to a world where marketers and writers have a little help from AI along the way.

The evolution of public opinion has been an interesting rollercoaster over the last few years and it’s gone something like this.

  • 🎉 2020: Enthusiasts love it and it will change the world. Apathetics haven’t heard of it, it’s just not important to them. Skeptics hate it and are scared of losing their jobs.
  • 📈 2021: The AI improves a lot! Enthusiasts love it even more and AI writing companies are swimming in cash. Apathetics start to hear something about it, but still not interested enough to try it out. The skeptics hate it even more, and are starting to formulate reasons why we shouldn’t use AI in the writing process (with some valid points).
  • 🤯 2022: The AI continues to improve, hundreds of new tools on the market. Enthusiasts are out of their mind and people are publishing low quality blog posts at a rapid pace until Google catches up and tells them to knock it off. Apathetics are finally trying the tools and see the value—they acknowledge the tools exist and start to learn about them. The skeptics are conceding that AI can actually help, as long you are careful and pick your spots.
  • 🔥🤯🔥 2023: The end of 2022 and beginning of 2023 was dominated by ChatGPT, a free tool built by OpenAI that set the internet on fire. It set the stage for 2023 to be the year of generative AI for marketers.

What do we have in store for the rest of 2023? It’s bound to be an exciting year for AI and marketing, so let’s take a look at what these things are and how we can use them, what Google thinks of them, and how to pick and evaluate the many (many) tools currently available.

Why do marketers use AI writing tools?

There are many use cases for AI writing tools for marketers, copywriters, people in sales, founders, and anyone else that writes for a living. It can help plan new content, kick you out writers’ block, simply create more content (within reason), and reformat and repurpose content for multiple channels and use cases.

Getting rid of writers’ block

Getting rid of writers’ block is the classic application that most AI writing tools advertise.

It’s very simple. Don’t know where to start? Tired of looking at a blank page? Stuck on what to write next? Let the AI give you a little nudge. Experienced writers and marketers tend to balk at this when it’s the only value proposition, but this is extremely helpful for founders, new freelancers, and young writers that may not have developed the muscle yet. The potential downside is that they may never develop the muscle thanks to this technology, but that’s a completely different problem.

Getting rid of writers’ block is a great application of AI writing tools. It’s the perfect balance of letting the tool help you and not take over. Maybe just an introduction sentence here or an expansion of existing idea there. This is very different from asking a tool to write an entire blog post in a single shot, which is outside of the recommended use case for most AI writing tools.

Volume, Volume, Volume

We all want more content, right?

Well maybe not all of us, but many of us struggle to keep the trains moving when it comes to targeting new keywords, establishing authority over important topics on social and the SERPs, and supporting our sales and leadership teams with content they need to do their jobs effectively.

AI writing tools help create more content, in less time. Whether it’s simply kicking writers’ block to the curb, helping error check and rephrase your content for specific audiences, coming up with new content ideas faster, or repurposing existing content for more channels and audiences, AI writing tools help you move faster and create more content.

Repurposing and Distribution

If you’re not into AI helping you write your content, you might be more interested in it helping you reformat and repurpose the content that you’ve already created.

For example, you might have written a monster long-form blog post that included primary research and interviews with subject matter experts (AI can’t do this). But if you just publish this on your website, it might just waste away in the depths of your content archive if you don’t invest the proper amount of time distributing and repurposing it.

As many content marketing gurus say on LinkedIn on Twitter, “Content is King, Distribution is Queen.”

Simply dropping a link in Slack groups and on Twitter will be an embarrassing distribution strategy in 2023. You ought to be thinking about creating native content that adds value to the users on whatever platform they are active on. For example, repurposing your blog post for LinkedIn so it can stand alone, independent of the original blog post is a brilliant marketing strategy. This is especially valuable when it is posted by an internal employee like the CEO or other subject matter experts with an audience within your organization.

AI is great at taking what you have already written, and repackaging it for whatever platform you need. It can look at relevant Quora questions, and use your blog post to answer them. It can generate a killer Twitter thread based on interview questions and it can even split long blogs into multiple shorter one pagers for different parts of the funnel.

What does Google think about AI-generated content?

Google has a complicated relationship with AI generated content. On the one hand, it is no stranger to AI and AI-enabled technologies. On the other hand, it has an enormous, existential interest in preserving the quality of its search results. Providing a valuable experience for its users and advertisers is the primary goal of Google’s business.

2022 has been a year of big updates from the Google Webmaster team. Luckily, they are nice enough to let us know what they are focusing on so we can modify or eliminate our strategies accordingly. With the growth of AI tools in 2022, they are obviously paying attention to AI-generated content (if they can detect it) and modifying their algorithms accordingly.

The two big algorithm updates from 2022 were the “Helpful Content” update and the “Spam” update. Both fired a warning shot at the marketers and writers who were publishing unreasonable amounts of low quality content using AI writing tools.

The last update in 2023 introduced Google’s “E-E-A-T” framework which is going to put increased value on content that demonstrates experience with the topic being discussed. This is challenge for super-AI users, but probably positive for readers in general.

Google’s Helpful Content Update

The Helpful Content Update announcement is brief, but it gives us a look into how Google Search is prioritizing content moving forward. First, it gives us a checklist of requirements so we can refer to the guidelines as we create original content. There is also a set of things to avoid when creating SEO content. Finally, some details around how the update will be implemented and what to expect moving forward is provided.

In summary, Google wants us to write content “for people” and “by people”. The human element to your content should be put first and foremost. This is a great thing for everyone. No one wants shallow content created by a robot that doesn’t provide any information or insight.

Marketers using AI writing tools should continue to make sure the content they create is truly helpful to the readers. Hitting “go” on an AI writing tool followed by a quick “publish” doesn’t do anyone any good. It hurts your website because that content will likely lack the human touch to create real value and will hurt the reader because the content will be shallow and largely unhelpful.

The magic happens when markers and writers use AI writing tools to augment their already great work. These tools are not meant to replace the writer, but to help them when they get stuck and replace the writer on the boring stuff that doesn’t contribute to the “helpful” part of helpful content.

Google’s Spam Update

The most recent algorithm update from 2022 out of Google’s Webmaster team was the “spam” update. The good news about this update is that (according to Google), it’s difficult to be guilty of publishing spam without being aware of it. For example, if you’re publishing 300 blog posts a week with your new shiny AI writing tool, you’re probably guilty of spam (and you know it). If you’re creating thin content that provides no value and is utterly unhelpful, cut it out!

This update is relevant to AI writing tools only to the extent that it emphasizes the importance of using them responsibly, with good intentions, and in a way that will ultimately help your business and not just drive shallow traffic to your niche website.

Google’s E-E-A-T Update (December 2022)

Most marketers and SEOs were familiar with the “E-A-T” framework, but Google added a second “E” this year which stands for “experience”. To rank well on Google in 2023, you better demonstrate some real experience in what you are talking about.

The Bottom Line

AI writing tools will not put your website and your blog in jeopardy.

This is of course only the case if you use these tools responsibly and with common sense. The ultimate objective of any piece of content has two main components. First, you need to add value to the reader. This is the only way your content will rank on Google and other sites will link back to it. Second, you want your content to either generate brand awareness or convince the reader into taking some action.

The second part of this objective doesn’t have much to do with AI writing tools, but more how you structure your messaging and overall content strategy. However, the first part can certainly be hindered by an irresponsible AI user.

The bottom line is that if you use AI writing tools the right way: as a partner and an efficiency booster rather than a replacement, there’s no way Google will be able to tell that you used an AI writer to help you. There should still be plenty of original thought, research, and human touches to make your AI-assisted piece indistinguishable from any other piece of content, outside of the fact that it will probably be published faster and cleaner.

AI Writing Tools for Marketers in 2023

There seems to be more AI writing tools for marketers launched every week. Some are fantastic and provide valuable differentiation, and others are just copying the leaders to gobble up a piece of the pie. Both are reasonable strategies, but it’s good to consider a number of factors when deciding which tools to try and which tools to pass on.

How much do AI writing tools cost?

There is a wide range of products built for marketers of all levels of sophistication. Whether you’re on a well-funded marketing team at a Fortune 100 company or a single marketer at a startup, there’s a tool for you. Your requirements for text formats, collaboration, and security may be very different from another marketer.

Many tools have a free trial or a completely free plan (81.8%), which is great to try out new AI technologies. We looked at a large group of popular AI tools to look at the price ranges and whether or not they offer a free trial or free plan. In addition, many tools offer customized plans for enterprise teams (53.9%) for more advanced or high volume use cases.

The overall cost of AI writing tools varies from several hundred dollars per month down to only a few dollars. Since the fundamental technology underneath most of these platform is the same (GPT-3 by OpenAI), the price of the tools typically scales with the number of words generated. In general, AI tools pay per word that is sent through the OpenAI platform.

Here’s a distribution of the high and low prices of 75+ AI writing tools, excluding custom enterprise plans and free trials/plans.

There are a number of high-ticket products, but the majority of available tools on the market range between $25/month and $100/month.

AI writing tools and specializations

Most AI writing tools have a specialty beyond simply completing your sentences or getting you started to fight writers’ block. Whether is supplemental data that supports the writing process or a specialization in a specific type of marketing copy, it’s important to consider whether the AI tool for you was built for your specific application.

AI writing tools & SEO

Some AI writing tools are specialists at helping you create SEO-optimized content. This content is meant to live on your blog and designed to rank as high as possible for your target keywords. Whether it’s helping you research which keywords to write about, making sure you’re using the keywords appropriately, or optimizing the technical aspects of your article for SEO, these tools are great if you’re looking to rank quickly for your target set of keywords.

Some great examples of AI writing tools that optimize for SEO content in the database below include AISEO, Article Forge, Frase, GrowthBar, Kafkai, Outranking, Qopywriter, Texta, Typli.ai, and Writesonic.

AI writing for Social media

Social media is a fantastic channel for AI-generated content. The short nature of most social posts sits right in the sweet spot of the capabilities of AI writing tools as they exist today. There are a number of ways to generate content for social media from coming up with new ideas in your niche to repurposing other long form content for social channels.

Some AI writing tools specialize in this application including copymatic, Lately, MarketingCopy, Postly, Simplified AI, Tweethunter, and Tweets on Demand.

AI writing for Email marketing & Sales

Email marketing and sales copy typically have some commonalities in that they are heavy in copywriting and looking to convert users into subscribers or existing subscribers into higher-paying subscribers. This type of writing is often a bit different than top-of-the-funnel blog content or even bottom-of-the-funnel product reviews or case studies.

Much like social content, email marketing and sales content is a fantastic use of AI writing tools thanks to the brevity and simplicity of the content. There messaging is generally to the point and follows very predictable patterns and best practices.

There are many tools optimized for email and sales, here are a few: Benchmark, Lavender, and Smartwriter.ai.

AI writing for Ad copy

Ad copy isn’t the hardest type of content to create thanks to the length of it, but A/B testing is a critical part of find the right ads for the right audience. With this in mind, getting a little help in generating creative variations of your ad copy is a great use case for AI writing tools.

Several tools optimize for this task, and the top ones do it very well: AdCreative.ai, Friday, Copy.AI, and Writesonic.

Repurposing and Rewriting

AI writing tools are great at creating net-new content, but they are also fantastic at repurposing and rewriting the content that you’ve already created. Whether or not you created this original content with AI doesn’t really matter. Often times you’ve created a piece of content with original research or interviews, and you want to repurpose that content for social, material for an email newsletter, or a number of other multi-use applications.

AI tools focused on repackaging and rewriting existing content include Automata, Quillbot, WordAi, Wordtune, and Writecream.

General Writing with AI

AI writing tools that aren’t explicitly created for marketers are not hard to come by. They have opened up their use cases to anything that can be written; however, they can still be used to speed up content pipelines for marketers.

Many application-agnostic AI writing tools focus on sentence completion, grammar checking, and plagiarism checking as their core functions and do not provide insights on SEO or specific structures around social content, ad copy, or blog writing.

Some of the top generic AI writing tools include AI Writer, Automated Insights, Creaitor.ai, Hyperwrite, ParagraphAI, Peppertype.ai, and Writer.

75+ AI Writing tools for marketers

Let’s get down to the tools. This list is always growing and editing, so look at it as a living and breathing resource (here’s the Notion database if you want to go directly to the source of this analysis).
