Ever since a certain company raised a giant pile of cash in October 2022 to continue building their AI-powered writing platform, it seems like everybody’s on the AI train for the foreseeable future. Even the skeptics and apathetics are starting to come around to a world where marketers and writers have a little help from AI along the way.
The evolution of public opinion has been an interesting rollercoaster over the last few years and it’s gone something like this.
- 🎉 2020: Enthusiasts love it and it will change the world. Apathetics haven’t heard of it, it’s just not important to them. Skeptics hate it and are scared of losing their jobs.
- 📈 2021: The AI improves a lot! Enthusiasts love it even more and AI writing companies are swimming in cash. Apathetics start to hear something about it, but still not interested enough to try it out. The skeptics hate it even more, and are starting to formulate reasons why we shouldn’t use AI in the writing process (with some valid points).
- 🤯 2022: The AI continues to improve, hundreds of new tools on the market. What do we have in store for the rest of 2023? It’s bound to be an exciting year for AI and marketing, so let’s take a look at what these things are and how we can use them, what Google thinks of them, and how to pick and evaluate the many (many) tools currently available.
Why do marketers use AI writing tools?
There are many use cases for AI writing tools for marketers, copywriters, people in sales, founders, and anyone else that writes for a living. It can help plan new content, kick you out writers’ block, simply create more content (within reason), and reformat and repurpose content for multiple channels and use cases.
Getting rid of writers’ block
Getting rid of writers’ block is the classic application that most AI writing tools advertise.
It’s very simple. Don’t know where to start? Tired of looking at a blank page? Stuck on what to write next? Let the AI give you a little nudge. Experienced writers and marketers tend to balk at this when it’s the only value proposition, but this is extremely helpful for founders, new freelancers, and young writers that may not have developed the muscle yet. The potential downside is that they may never develop the muscle thanks to this technology, but that’s a completely different problem.
Getting rid of writers’ block is a great application of AI writing tools. It’s the perfect balance of letting the tool help you and not take over. Whether it’s simply kicking writers’ block to the curb, helping error check and rephrase your content for specific audiences, coming up with new content ideas faster, or repurposing existing content for more channels and audiences, AI writing tools help you move faster and create more content.
Repurposing and Distribution
If you’re not into AI helping you write your content, you might be more interested in it helping you reformat and repurpose the content that you’ve already created.
For example, you might have written a monster long-form blog post that included primary research and interviews with subject matter experts (AI can’t do this). But if you just publish this on your website, it might just waste away in the depths of your content archive if you don’t invest the proper amount of time distributing and repurposing it.

Google has a complicated relationship with AI generated content. On the one hand, it is no stranger to AI and AI-enabled technologies. On the other hand, it has an enormous, existential interest in preserving the quality of its search results. Providing a valuable experience for its users and advertisers is the primary goal of Google’s business.
2022 has been a year of big updates from the Google Webmaster team. Luckily, they are nice enough to let us know what they are focusing on so we can modify or eliminate our strategies accordingly. With the growth of AI tools in 2022, they are obviously paying attention to AI-generated content (if they can detect it) and modifying their algorithms accordingly.
The two big algorithm updates from 2022 were the “Helpful Content” update and the “Spam” update. Both fired a warning shot at the marketers and writers who were publishing unreasonable amounts of low quality content using AI writing tools.
The last update in 2023 introduced Google’s “E-E-A-T” framework which is going to put increased value on content that demonstrates experience with the topic being discussed. This is challenge for super-AI users, but probably positive for readers in general.
Google’s Helpful Content Update
The Helpful Content Update announcement is brief, but it gives us a look into how Google Search is prioritizing content moving forward. First, it gives us a checklist of requirements so we can refer to the guidelines as we create original content. There is also a set of things to avoid when creating SEO content. Finally, some details around how the update will be implemented and what to expect moving forward is provided.
In summary, Google wants us to write content “for people” and “by people”. The human element to your content should be put first and foremost. This is a great thing for everyone. No one wants shallow content created by a robot that doesn’t provide any information or insight.
Marketers using AI writing tools should continue to make sure the content they create is truly helpful to the readers. Hitting “go” on an AI writing tool followed by a quick “publish” doesn’t do anyone any good. It hurts your website because that content will likely lack the human touch to create real value and will hurt the reader because the content will be shallow and largely unhelpful.
The magic happens when markers and writers use AI writing tools to augment their already great work. These tools are not meant to replace the writer, but to help them when they get stuck and replace the writer on the boring stuff that doesn’t contribute to the “helpful” part of helpful content.
Google’s Spam Update

Most marketers and SEOs were familiar with the “E-A-T” framework, but Google added a second “E” this year which stands for “experience”. To rank well on Google in 2023, you better demonstrate some real experience in what you are talking about.

AI writing tools will not put your website and your blog in jeopardy.
This is of course only the case if you use these tools responsibly and with common sense. The ultimate objective of any piece of content has two main components. First, you need to add value to the reader. This is the only way your content will rank on Google and other sites will link back to it. The overall cost of AI writing tools varies from several hundred dollars per month down to only a few dollars. Since the fundamental technology underneath most of these platform is the same (GPT-3 by OpenAI), the price of the tools typically scales with the number of words generated. In general, AI tools pay per word that is sent through the OpenAI platform.

Whether it’s helping you research which keywords to write about, making sure you’re using the keywords appropriately, or optimizing the technical aspects of your article for SEO, these tools are great if you’re looking to rank quickly for your target set of keywords.
